Welcome to Bække - a hub on the Hærvej route for both hikers and cyclists.
And welcome to one of the most authentic places on the Ancient Road. The landscape with the watershed and large marsh areas around Bække tells us that the original Hærvej went right through the town – just like today.
In Hærvejsknudepunkt Bække you will find:
Whereabouts:
- Hærvejshuset - the house is open from xx. to xz. You are very welcome to stop by and take a break. You must pick up a key fob in the supermarket. See more about what you can do in Hærvejshuset here.
- Packed lunch cabin - located about 50 on the other side of the large parking lot. Look over towards the trees to the west.
- Sun loungers and mini golf - here you can rest your legs and relax - either lying down or playing a game of mini golf to break the monotony of the hike. Where are the clubs and balls?
- A little further south along Søndergade and past the church, here you will find Bække Anlæg with a covered set of table benches and a fire pit.
procurement:
- The best bet for shopping in Bække is Brugsen, located right across from the Hærvej hub - and is open every day. This is also where you can find a cup of hot coffee/tea/cocoa.
- If you are heading south, then the next shopping is in Vejen, where there are many grocery stores. In the north you will find a limited supply close to the route at Bindeballe Købmandsgård (soft drinks, ice cream etc.) and shopping in Ødsted Brugs (close to Vingsted - a little from the route).
Facilities:
- The Ancient Road House is also used by local associations, so this is where you can meet everyday life along the Ancient Road. You just walk in, even when there is someone. Then there is usually coffee in the pot and the opportunity for a good chat. Before you leave the house, you are welcome to write in the guestbook. If there is none, you are welcome anyway. You pick up the key fob in the supermarket and return it. You can eat your packed lunch indoors, rest, see the exhibition about the Ancient Road, etc.
- Toilets can be found inside Hærvejshuset, in Bække Brugs, at Bække Church (on the east side of the cemetery) and in the summer period at Bække Anlæg.
- Water can be found at Hærvejshuset facing the asphalt site, inside Hærvejshuset, at Bække Church in the cemetery and in Brugsen
- Possibility of bathing in Hærvejshuset
- You will find a trash can outside the Hærvej house and inside
- Bicycle station at Hærvejshuset facing Vestergade. See more about the bike station here.
- Charging options for mobiles can be found inside the Hærvejshuset
- Wifi code can be found inside by the screen
- "Self-help kit" and first aid kit are on the bottom shelf of the counter inside
- Parking: below Hærvejshuset and Bække Veerst Local Archives, there are 4 parking spaces that you can use. There is no time limit and it is free.
- Information material about Bække in print can be found partly inside the Hærvejshuset and in the brochure holder to the right at eye level on the wall just inside the first sliding door to the supermarket. Most materials in Danish.

Ancient Road Culture:
Bække and the Ancient Road belong inextricably together. The landscape around Bække tells us that the Ancient Road went right through the town. So when you walk through Bække, you are exactly on the original stretch of Hærvej, where water either flows east or west. The watershed or ridge was optimal to use as a roadway in ancient times - because it meant the fewest streams to be passed. And it was a hassle back then. If you pour a huge bucket of water into Bække, the water will run along 5 different rivers and to both the east and west coasts of Jutland. So when you walk past Bække Church, remember that others have done the same - for 1000 years before you. Bække's central location on the Ancient Road through the centuries means that you will also find strong Ancient Road stories here today.
